Abstract: The study aimed to assess the types and frequency of postoperative complications following different types of neck dissection. The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Dhaka Dental College and Hospital conducted this descriptive cross-sectional study. October 1, 2013, to March 30, 2014. During the study period, patients admitted to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Dhaka Dental College Hospital will undergo broad excision of lesions, combined with various forms of neck dissection. Following neck dissection, thirty patients in all were enrolled and assessed. The patient was evaluated for various complications including hemorrhage, seroma, wound dehiscence, infection, subcutaneous emphysema, salivary and chylous leakage, and nerve injuries such as marginal mandibular, hypoglossal, lingual, and spinal accessory nerve damage during the first 24 hours and at weekly intervals up to four weeks post-surgery. Data analysis was conducted using statistical software, specifically SPSS version 20. The study clearly indicates that female patients with co-morbidities are more prone to complications. Stage 4 cases exhibit a higher complication rate at 64.29%, with increased issues following radical neck dissection (23.3%). Nerve injuries are particularly common, with up to 20% involving mandibular nerve trauma at the margins. These findings will aid in reducing complications through better preoperative planning, early identification of perioperative problems, and effective management.
